Ryann Counce-Barnes M.Ed.
My name is Ryann Counce-Barnes and I am the owner of a family child care center in an urban neighborhood of Milwaukee, WI. My program has been successfully operating in my home since April 2012. I have a wide range of experience in the field of education, and work with children ages 6 weeks to high school seniors, as well as adult educators.
I have always enjoyed working with children, and have known since high school that my career path would involve education in some capacity. As a teenager, I worked during the summer as a camp counselor for a camp program at Northcott Neighborhood House and at many different Milwaukee Public School sites. I enjoyed working in these programs so much that I knew that working with children would be in my future.
Currently, I am the GEDO#2 Coordinator for a high school in Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), where I work with students 18 and older who are working to complete their GEDs. I have been employed with MPS for 19 years. In my time as an educator, I have not only been a Coordinator of the GED#O2 program, but have also served as a Special Education teacher and department chair, and filled in as a school administrator.
I have a great deal of experience working in family child care. In my early years as a teacher in MPS, I worked part-time in the evenings and in the summer months at both family and group child care centers. I served as an assistant teacher to the owner and collaborated with other teachers to plan lessons and activities, as well as redirect and facilitate learning with children at the daycare.
I decided to open my own family child care when I found out that I was pregnant with my youngest son. My idea was to open my own program and quit working for MPS, so that I could be home with my newborn baby. But my passion for children and my career did not allow me to leave MPS. To date, I continue to work as a full time teacher with MPS and own/operate a family child care center.
As a child care provider and owner of my own business, my interests in the field of child care have expanded. I am passionate about working with other professionals and serving as an advocate and supporter for their businesses. My plan is to be a voice for providers in my area, and to ensure that we are all being treated fairly.
